The 6CTA 8.3 sits a step above the 6BT and covers roughly the 150 to 250 kVA generator band, along with a good deal of marine auxiliary and construction plant. It is a mature, well-supported family with a broad parts economy, and in service it has a reputation for being straightforward — most of what goes wrong on a 6CTA goes wrong slowly and gives warning.

As with the 6BT, application matters: the same nominal component can carry different numbers between generator, marine and vehicle configurations, and the marine variants in particular differ in cooling and exhaust parts.
