Note the terminology distinction, because it causes confusion in enquiries: the alternators here are engine-mounted charging alternators that keep the starting batteries topped up. The main generator alternator — the one producing the output — is a separate item and quoted against the genset serial rather than the engine.

Voltage is the first thing to establish. Starter motors and charging alternators exist in 12 V and 24 V variants for the same engine, and the engine serial will not always tell you which is fitted, particularly on plant that has been refurbished. Read it off the existing unit.

Starting problems on standby plant are very often not the starter. Batteries that sit on float charge for months in high ambient temperatures degrade in ways that show up as slow cranking, and a slow-cranking set will kill a healthy starter motor through repeated long crank attempts. If the complaint is hard starting, check battery condition and the earth strap before ordering a starter — and if you do order one, order the earth strap and terminals with it.

On tier, both new and properly remanufactured starters and alternators are legitimate purchases and we quote both. Remanufactured units from a named rebuilder with a warranty are frequently the sensible choice on older plant. Repair components — brushes, bearings, solenoids — are also listed here where a rebuild is more economic than replacement.
